Footcare Tips For People With Diabetes

If you are diabetic it is crucial that you look after your feet. Diabetes can reduce the flow of blood to your feet, which can lead to a decrease of sensation in the feet and a delay in healing any damage. The reduced sensation in the feet can also mean you don’t feel as much pain in your feet. Therefore, you may not notice if your foot is sore or injured.

Diabetic footcare tips

  • See a podiatrist at least once a year
  • Check your feet everyday for cuts, blisters and swelling
  • Wash your feet in warm water everyday
  • Ensure you dry your feet. Especially between your toes
  • Trim or file your toe nails on a regular basis
  • If you have verrucas, corns or hard skin on a regular basis
  • Don’t walk barefoot outdoors to avoid cutting your feet
  • Don’t sit with your legs crossed as it can reduce circulation to your feet
  • Stop smoking as it can decrease circulation to your feet
