What are cracked heels?

Cracked heels, sometimes referred to as heel fissures, are a common foot condition.The condition develops when cracks or splits appear on the border of the heel. In some cases, the cracks in the heel can become deep, painful and can even bleed. They result from dry skin and are accompanied by thickening of the skin, on the heel. It is important to get them treated as they can become infected.

The causes of cracked heels

Cracked heels normally occur because of dry skin. Some of the causes of cracked heels include the following:

  • Cold weather
  • Hot showers
  • Not moisturising
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Walking around barefoot
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Soaking your feet in a hot bath for too long or too frequently

Some people are more prone to developing cracked heels. These include:

  • People with diabetes
  • Women who are pregnant
  • People with kidney disease
  • People with thyroid disease
  • People who are overweight
  • People who wear open back shoes
  • People with a skin condition such as psoriasis

Symptoms of cracked heels

In addition to having cracked heels you may have:

  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Bleeding
  • Flaky skin
  • Red inflamed skin

How to prevent cracked heels

There are numerous things you can do to help prevent developing cracked heels:

  • Wear shoes that properly fit – Avoid wearing open back shoes, flip flops, sandals, heels and shoes that are too tight
  • Wear padded socks
  • Moisturise your feet
  • Avoid standing for long periods
  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated
  • Wear shoe inserts to cushion your heel
